Job summary

Howard University Hospital seeks a Patient Access Associate I to join a team dedicated to high-quality, patient-centered care in the DC area. The role includes registration, admissions, and financial clearance, with emphasis on accuracy and customer service.

The position requires interaction with patients, families, and insurance carriers, plus eligibility verification, data entry, and billing support. Evening, night, and weekend shifts are required as part of the schedule.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s Degree preferred.
• Three (3) years of experience in patient access/registration, billing, cash collections, or related in a medical center or physician office.
• Familiarity with medical terminology and medical record keeping.
• Working knowledge of electronic scanning and documentation through applicable systems.
• Excellent customer service skills, communication skills, and telephone etiquette.

Responsibilities

• Provides registration, admission, bed management, financial clearance, and cash collection services for patients.
• Answers and responds to phone calls and inquiries in assigned areas.
• Verifies insurance coverage and eligibility; assists with Medicaid qualification as needed.
• Ensures accurate data entry of demographics, financial, insurance, and registration information.
• Maintains patient records using electronic scanning and scheduling systems.
• Supports staffing and bed placement decisions as needed.
• Collects copays and other patient payments; demonstrates professional conduct and confidentiality.
