Job summary

MUSC CHS After Hours & Specialty Clinics is seeking a Patient Access Clerk to greet patients, collect co-pays, and update accounts in a fast-paced outpatient setting. You will schedule appointments by phone or in person and coordinate with clinicians to support efficient clinic flow.

The role involves rotating day/evening/weekend/holiday shifts, working with diverse teams, and ensuring privacy and accuracy of patient information. This is a PRN, hourly position with MUHA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required or a high school diploma/GED with 2 years of work experience in a Medical Office, Call Center, or customer service environment.
• Minimum 6 months of MUHA Patient Access or medical-related work experience.

Responsibilities

• Greet and assist patients and families in person or by phone.
• Schedule appointments to optimize clinic efficiency.
• Maintain patient accounts and update personal and financial information.
• Collect co-pays and balance due; protect confidentiality.
• Provide customer service and route messages, manage referrals and scheduling with care teams.

Job Description Summary

MUSC Children's After Hours and Specialty Clinics, we are a pediatric outpatient clinic that falls under the Shawn Jenkin's Children's Hospital at MUSC. During the day, we host a variety of pediatric subspecialists such as pediatric orthopedics, cardiology, and pulmonary, only to name a few. In addition to that, we provide a walk-in After Hours Care, which is a direct extension of our pediatric emergency department to serve our community during the hours when most pediatricians are closed.

Job Description

Greets and welcomes patients and families in person or on the telephone. Optimizes the patients' experience and clinic efficiency time by scheduling appointments appropriately, either by phone or in person. Maintains patient accounts by obtaining, recording, and updating personal and financial information accurately and effectively. Collects Co-pays and prior patient balances. Protects patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information. Position also involves customer service, message distribution, ancillary scheduling and referrals management. Ability to interact with medical professionals and other care team members from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Hours of Operation

Shifts vary based on clinic needs

Specialty Clinic: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM

After Hours Care: Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM-10:00 PM

Weekends and holidays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

This position rotates shifts. An example schedule is as follows:

• Week 1: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-4:00 PM
• Week 2: Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM-10:30 PM
• Week 3: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, plus weekend coverage

Additional Job Description

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; or a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) and two years of work experience in a Medical Office, Call Center, and/or customer service business environment and a minimum of 6 months satisfactory work experience in MUHA Patient Access, or at least 6 months of medical related work experience is required.
