Overview
The University of Miami UHealth - Department of Patient Access in Boca Raton has an exciting opportunity for a Patient Access Representative 1. This role involves registering patients for clinical services, verifying insurance, and collecting payments.
Core Responsibilities
- Perform patient registration, verify insurance, and ensure all patient information is accurate.
- Obtain copies of insurance cards, driver's licenses, and referrals.
- Explain consent forms, financial liability, and HIPAA policies; obtain signatures.
- Assist patients with questionnaires and schedule follow-up appointments.
- Manage appointment changes and record no-shows accurately.
- Handle vouchers, answer calls, and respond to inquiries.
- Follow policies to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
Department Specific Functions
- Project professionalism and provide excellent patient interactions.
- Coordinate patient flow and assist with navigating self-service technology.
- Update demographic, financial, and clinical information accurately.
- Verify insurance coverage and obtain necessary referrals and authorizations.
- Provide financial counseling, explain benefits, and collect payments to reduce AR and bad debt.
- Handle high call volumes, perform cash reconciliation, and support key performance indicators.
- Work collaboratively with healthcare teams to ensure seamless patient experiences.
- Recognize and resolve issues proactively, maintaining safety protocols.
- Cross-train for various revenue cycle and clinical functions.
Area Specific Support
Support functions vary by department including ER, Admitting, CTU, Hospital-based clinics, Practice-based clinics, and remote call centers. Flexibility for rotating shifts, after-hours, weekends, and holidays is required.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
- Ability to obtain HFMA Patient Access Essentials certification.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations (OSHA, HIPAA, JC, AHCA, EMTALA, CMS).
- Excellent interpersonal, customer service, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with multiple systems and technology.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong team collaboration skills and ability to work independently.
