Qualifications

• One year of related experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience.
• Flexibility to orient at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Responsibilities

• Communicates administrative and financial policies to patients and refers to financial counseling or billing partners when needed.
• Obtains and documents insurance authorizations for visits, referrals, procedures, or ancillary services; relays information to insurance companies.
• Works queues to secure information for accurate billing submissions and responds to denials with CPT codes.
• Secures prior authorization for procedures, specialty visits, and ancillary testing; coordinates with Hospital Admissions as needed.
• Collects and verifies insurance and referral information for first appointments; creates and assigns records.
• Secures complex insurance authorizations and tracks renewals based on insurer limits.
• Understands patient insurance benefit packages including pharmacy and mental health carve-outs.
• Addresses patient billing complaints and collaborates with Patient Relations.
• Assists patients in understanding managed-care requirements.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Provides mental-health–specific guidelines to manage patient expectations.
• Obtains consents and signed documents at first visit.
• Maintains confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines.
