Job description

Summit Pathology is looking to add an enthusiastic team player to our fast‑paced, growing Pathology Company, as a Lab Assistant/Hospital Tech at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY. The hours for this position will be Monday‑Friday 8:00A-4:30P. As a Lab Assistant/Hospital Tech you will work closely with Pathologists and hospital staff to provide exceptional care to patients through assisting with processing and preparation of surgical and cytology specimens.

Summit Pathology is an independent pathology laboratory, owned by a practice of twenty‑one board‑certified pathologists. We have been serving hospital systems and physician offices in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska for more than thirty‑five years. With a variety of subspecialties, Summit Pathology offers world‑class expertise, state‑of‑the‑art disease detection and exceptional customer service. We take pride in providing outstanding general surgical pathology as well as high‑level expertise in additional areas such as breast pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology (including flow cytometry), gastrointestinal pathology, dermatopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, and clinical chemistry.

Responsibilities And Duties
  • Assesses specimen quality, makes necessary corrections, and prepares the specimen for processing or grossing.
  • Accessioning specimens into the supported LIS system. Data entry.
  • Demonstrates absolute accuracy in identification and accessioning of numbers and names.
  • Accurate quality control of requisitions.
  • Assists on routine needle procedures including fine needle aspirations, CT biopsies, and endoscopic procedures; responsible for slide preparation and staining.
  • Assists with frozen section specimens from operating rooms.
  • Handles inventory, upkeep, and organization of off‑site gross rooms.
  • Routinely interacts with hospital staff, answers and triages phone calls, and demonstrates positive customer interactions and proper phone etiquette.
  • Works and communicates cooperatively with team members to identify and complete lab responsibilities and meet department goals.
  • Participates in department activities to improve patient care/lab systems, shares new information with all team members, attends team meetings, and effectively orients/mentors new staff as requested.
  • Follows all procedures and policies, demonstrates competency and proficiency as required.
  • Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes unsafe equipment, and attends safety education sessions.
  • In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based upon Summit Pathology needs or requirements.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
  • Education/experience: Earned associate degree (or higher) in a laboratory science from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and to effectively problem‑solve issues.
  • Ability to organize work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain the necessary level of confidentiality to protect patient privacy.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Competency and accuracy using multiple computer systems.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, including medical terminology.
  • Previous data entry or laboratory/healthcare experience preferred.
