Job summary

DMC University Laboratories, Inc. in Detroit, MI is seeking a Pathology Assistant to assist in all aspects of anatomic pathology under the direction of a pathologist. You will describe, collect and prepare specimens for histology in a fast-paced lab environment.

Responsibilities include prosections, gross descriptions, ensuring legal permissions for autopsies, and supporting training seminars for students and residents; opportunity to work across multiple hospital sites within the DMC system.

Qualifications

• Graduate from a Baccalaureate Pathology Assistant program or successful completion of a post bachelor’s program from an approved school of Pathology Assistants.
• OR Bachelor’s degree in sciences with background in physiology and anatomy with three to five years experience in pathology.

Responsibilities

• Assist in all aspects of anatomic pathology under general direction of a pathologist; describe and examine surgical specimens and prepare for histology processing.
• Perform autopsy prosection and dictate gross description of surgical specimens.
• Ensure legal permission for autopsies and assist in obtaining permissions.
• Prepare abstracts of medical records and present to pathologists before autopsy start.
• Maintain autopsy room, equipment and supplies in a clean, safe condition per safety guidelines.
• Transfer and handle body from morgue to autopsy table and perform autopsy from start to finish.
• Contribute to training seminars for pathology assistant students and residents.
• Prepare fine needle aspirates and renal biopsy specimens for examination; assess adequacy.
