Job summary

NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island is seeking a Pathologists' Assistant to provide pathology services under a pathologist's supervision. You will perform gross examination, dissection, and preparation for tests including frozen section, histology, and immunohistochemistry, with involvement in teaching and QA/QI efforts.

The role emphasizes accurate specimen handling, education of residents, and collaboration with pathologists, housestaff, and staff within a busy academic pathology service.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathology Assistant training program, or Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, biology or related field.
• NYSDOH License as a Pathologist Assistant.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Assists supervisor, pathologists, housestaff, and management with any and all other duties as assigned.
• Reconciliation of specimens: ensures accessioning, labeling, and requisitions accuracy according to procedures.
• Obtaining and applying clinical information to analysis and interpretation of surgical cases.
• Gross description: dictation of detailed gross descriptions per protocols; ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Dissection of specimens and preparation of tissue for histology, frozen sections, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry; involves photography and correlation with attending.
• Maintenance of laboratory equipment and cleanliness; manage supply inventory as needed.
• Assist in organization of anatomic pathology conferences and resident training.
• Support QA/QI initiatives and CAP, NYSDOH and Joint Commission standards in the gross room.
