Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Pathologists’ Assistant Float I to support gross pathology work across Lake Forest and McHenry hospitals. The role involves collaboration with pathologists, handling biopsy specimens, and assisting in resident training.

The position is full-time, weekdays only (Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts) with primary duties at Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital and McHenry Hospital and potential coverage at Kishwaukee and Delnor hospitals.

Qualifications

• Master of Science required.
• Pathologists’ Assistant degree required.
• Certification or eligibility for ASCP preferred or Illinois medical license with enrollment in anatomical pathology.

Responsibilities

• Performs all duties as scheduled by the pathologist.
• Performs gross examination and dissection of surgical biopsies and large specimens, maintaining specimen integrity.
• Assists with intra-operative consultations; prepares cryostat sections and tracks turnaround times.
• Prepares specimens for imaging, photographs, and maintains imaging files.
• Participates in conferences with residents, pathologists, and clinical staff.
• Maintains a clean, safe work area and follows procedures and regulatory guidelines.

Education

Master of Science

Pathologists’ Assistant’s degree

Pathologists’ Assistant Certification (ASCP) or eligible for certification

Illinois licensed MD/DO with enrollment in anatomical pathology
