Endeavor Health is seeking a Pathologist Assistant - Per Diem to support Evanston Hospital. You will assist pathologists, prepare specimens, and perform intraoperative consultations in a flexible per diem role.

Requirements include a NAACLS-accredited master's program and ASCP PA certification. New grads welcome; 3–5 years experience preferred. Per diem hours and a collaborative, safety‑focused pathology team are offered.

Responsibilities

• Examine and prepare specimens for microscopic evaluation with gross description and dissection.
• Handle specimens with special procedures (flow cytometry, IHC, radiology, research procurement).
• Perform frozen sections and intra-operative consultations per protocol.
• Determine appropriate fixatives for tissue.
• Photograph all pertinent gross specimens.
• Adhere to biohazard safety policies and disposal procedures.
• Assist training of pathology residents and students.
• Maintain lab equipment and safety standards.
• Communicate clearly and collaborate with other departments.
• Demonstrate attention to detail under pressure.

Position Highlights

• Position: Pathologist Assistant - Per Diem
• Location: Evanston Hospital
• Full Time/Part Time: Per diem
• Hours: Monday-Friday, must be flexible

What You Will Do

• Under the direct supervision of the Pathologists, examine and prepare specimens for microscopic evaluation by providing gross description and dissection of surgical pathology specimens ranging from biopsies to complex resections.
• Perform additional special handling of the specimens, including but not limited to flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, radiology or tissue procurement for research.
• Perform frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations within established protocol and procedural parameters.
• Determine proper fixative solutions in which tissue may need to be maintained.
• Photograph all pertinent gross specimens.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures related to handling, storage and disposal of all specimens while adhering to regulatory and compliance standards regarding biohazard and safety.
• Assist with training of pathology residents, PA students and pathology technician II’s (when applicable).
• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper safety and cleanliness protocols are followed.
• Ability to communicate clearly, work in harmony with other departments and collaborate effectively in a team.
• Attention to detail, problem-solving skills and the ability to work efficiently under pressure.

What You Will Need

• Education: Master’s Degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program.
• Certification: ASCP Certification (PA, Pathologists’ Assistant)
• Experience: New grads welcome, 3-5 years of experience preferred.
• Unique or Preferred Skills: Ability to operate a cryostat, cassette printer, safety hood, bone saw, voice recognition software, camera, computer and fax machine. Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Word and Excel).
