Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient testing following authorized technical procedures.
  • Meet established turnaround times for test results and reporting.
  • Log and track specimens using EMR systems.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Prepare frozen tissue sections and perform gross descriptions.
  • Assist with autopsy preparation and on-call rotations.
  • Photograph specimens for documentation and case review.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and PPE usage.

Job Title: Travel Pathologist Assistant

Duration: 26 weeks

Central time, 6:am to 2:30 pm

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Pathologist Assistant to support anatomic pathology services under the supervision of a Pathologist. In this role, you will contribute to surgical pathology and autopsy services through specimen preparation, gross examination, dissection, and accurate documentation, ensuring timely and precise diagnostic outcomes.

Under direct supervision, you will perform gross descriptions of simple or limited specimens, assist during autopsies, prepare frozen section slides, and support routine histology tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform patient testing following authorized technical procedures
  • Meet established turnaround times for test results and reporting
  • Accurately receive and log specimens using proper identification and EMR systems
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Label tissue cassettes and prepare frozen tissue sections (cutting, labeling, staining)
  • Conduct gross descriptions of limited pathology specimens
  • Assist with autopsy preparation, including evisceration support
  • Participate in on-call autopsy rotations
  • Photograph specimens for documentation and case review
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including PPE usage
  • Maintain accurate, organized records and documentation
  • Complete annual competency assessments and pursue professional development
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Skills & Experience
  • 1-3 years of laboratory technical experience
  • Strong understanding of laboratory testing procedures
  • Ability to work collaboratively and follow detailed instructions
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Strong judgment and ability to handle confidential information
  • Ability to multitask and stay composed under pressure
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures
  • Effective communication with healthcare teams
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities
  • Understanding of specimen handling and pre-analytical processes
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology

REQUIRED – meet all requirements for non-pathologist performing gross tissue examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493, 1489

Preferred

Masters Degree

Preferred 1 year surgical gross experience, including large complex/complicated specimens
