Job description

Under the supervision of a licensed physician practicing anatomic pathology, the Pathology Assistant is responsible for processing and documenting specimens, assisting with postmortem examinations, preparing samples for analysis, and ensuring efficient laboratory operations. The role supports optimal patient care by maintaining compliance with healthcare standards and improving laboratory service delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities :

• Grossing and Tissue Preparation :
• Prepare gross tissue sections for analysis, including dissection, description, cutting, staining, and processing for bio-banking or histologic examination (e.g., frozen sections).
• Perform human autopsies, including external examination, internal dissection, selection of tissues and fluids, and documentation of findings.
• Specimen Handling and Accessioning :
• Participate in labeling, accessioning, storage, and disposal of specimens; maintain reagents and lab equipment.
• Photography and Documentation :
• Photograph surgical specimens; ensure quality and compliance for pathology photographic documentation.
• Equipment and Inventory Management :
• Maintain and disinfect laboratory equipment; manage supply inventory; calibrate and troubleshoot instruments.
• Compliance and Safety :
• Adhere to protocols, infection prevention procedures, and safety standards specific to gross room operations.
• Data Analysis and Reporting :
• Analyze collected data and prepare reports as needed.
• Administrative Support :
• Complete, process, and file documentation and forms.
• Additional Duties :
• Perform other related tasks as assigned to support lab operations.

Qualifications :

• Education : Bachelor’s Degree required.
• License : Valid New York State license and current registration as a Pathologists’ Assistant issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) required.
• Experience : Prior experience in grossing specimens and performing autopsies is required.
