Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after reviewing the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to reapply.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending applicants may be considered and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met initial appointment standards are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school
• Current, full, unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
• Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification
• Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who are fully licensed but only allowed to perform certain duties under supervision
• Proficiency in English
• Physical requirements include moderate lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, and visual and hearing capabilities

Duties

The James J Peters VA Medical Center seeks a full-time Staff Pathologist to provide diagnostic services within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, covering facilities in Bronx, NY, and surrounding CBOCs. Responsibilities include:

• Performing diagnostic evaluations of surgical, cytopathology, and autopsy specimens
• Providing clinical laboratory consultation
• Participating in Quality Assurance and teaching residents and healthcare personnel
• Reviewing specimens, interpreting intraoperative frozen sections, and managing autopsies
• Participating in multidisciplinary conferences and research projects
• Providing on-call services and maintaining professional development
