Epiq Counsel is seeking an experienced Patent Paralegal to support its Intellectual Property team on a hybrid basis in Indianapolis. The role covers the patent lifecycle from filing to maintenance and portfolio administration, collaborating with attorneys, foreign associates, and vendors.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in patent/paralegal roles, experience with Anaqua or similar systems, and strong analytical and communication skills in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in patent paralegal or IP support.
  • Experience in patent filing, prosecution, maintenance and portfolio administration.
  • Experience electronically filing patent documents with domestic and international offices.
  • Experience with IP management/docketing systems like Anaqua.

Responsibilities

  • Manage patent docket activities across the lifecycle including filing and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, patent professionals, and vendors to file and prosecute patents.
  • Research issues, analyze information, and resolve procedural challenges.

Job description

Our client, a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company, is seeking an experienced Patent Paralegal to support its Intellectual Property team on a hybrid basis (3 days/week onsite) out of their offices in Indianapolis. This long-term, Indianapolis based hybrid opportunity offers the chance to work with a high-performing in-house legal team.

This professional will provide critical support across the patent lifecycle, including patent filing, prosecution, maintenance, portfolio administration, and intellectual property operations. The ideal candidate will have experience working with domestic and international patent matters and will serve as a key partner to attorneys, patent professionals, foreign associates, and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage patent docket activities throughout the patent lifecycle, including filing, prosecution, maintenance, citation management, record keeping, and workflow coordination.
  • Collaborate closely with attorneys, patent agents, patent professionals, and external service providers to facilitate the timely filing, prosecution, and maintenance of patent assets while supporting continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Research complex issues, analyze information, resolve procedural challenges, and develop practical solutions to support intellectual property operations.
  • Build effective working relationships with assigned business stakeholders and legal teams while proactively identifying support needs, addressing obstacles, and escalating issues when appropriate.
  • Coordinate and support intellectual property projects by developing action plans, tracking deliverables, assisting with resource coordination, and helping ensure successful implementation of key initiatives.
  • Monitor developments in intellectual property laws, regulations, and industry practices and assess their potential impact on departmental procedures, strategies, and operational processes.
  • Independently prioritize workload and effectively balance individual responsibilities while contributing to broader team objectives.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with attorneys, inventors, business stakeholders, outside counsel, vendors, and other external partners.
  • Identify and engage appropriate resources and stakeholders as needed to successfully complete assignments and operational objectives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a patent paralegal, patent operations, or intellectual property support role.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting patent filing, prosecution, maintenance, and patent portfolio administration activities.
  • Experience electronically filing patent-related documents with domestic and international patent offices.
  • Proven ability to support large patent portfolios in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Experience utilizing intellectual property management systems, docketing platforms, and legal technology tools, including systems such as Anaqua or comparable software.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, proofreading, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate across functions and with external service providers.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or life sciences industry experience preferred.
  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred.
