Job summary

Boutique IP firm in Old Town Alexandria is hiring three Patent Attorneys and/or Patent Agents to expand its patent practice. The firm offers meaningful responsibility, mentorship, and a collaborative environment, with a waterfront office and free parking.

The openings cover Chemical/Chemical Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical/Software Engineering, and Biotechnology. Hybrid schedule: in-office Monday–Wednesday, remote Thursday and Friday.

Qualifications

• Registered to practice before the USPTO.
• 1–3 years of patent preparation and prosecution experience.
• Strong writing and analytical abilities.
• Ability to understand complex technologies and draft patent applications.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and draft patent applications.

We are recruiting on behalf of a growing boutique Intellectual Property firm in beautiful Old Town Alexandria that is expanding its patent practice and looking to hire three Patent Attorneys and/or Patent Agents.

This is an excellent opportunity for patent professionals who want sophisticated work, meaningful responsibility, mentorship, and professional development within a smaller, collaborative firm environment.

The firm is located on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, offers free parking, and has a hybrid work schedule.

Current Openings:

• Chemical / Chemical Engineering
• Degree or technical background in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
• Knowledge of organic chemistry required
• Mechanical / Electrical / Software Engineering
• Degree or technical background in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering
• Biotechnology
• Background in biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline
• Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field required

What You'll Do:

• Prepare and draft patent applications
• Handle all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution
• Analyze USPTO Office Actions and develop strategies for response
• Prepare responses to Office Actions
• Maintain accurate billing, files, and docketing
• Take on increasing levels of responsibility as your experience grows

Qualifications:

• Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
• Approximately 1-3 years of patent preparation and prosecution experience
• Prior experience drafting patent applications
• Strong attention to detail
• Excellent technical, analytical, and writing skills
• Ability to quickly understand complex technologies
• Professional, motivated, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
