The City of Omaha is hiring for a Full Time Parts Clerk in the City’s parts room. You will handle receipt, inventory, issuance, and tracking of automotive and equipment parts, tools, and supplies.

The role requires high school graduation and experience in a parts warehouse. Valid Class O driver’s license and forklift permit by end of probation are required. Competitive hourly pay and benefits are offered.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, unloads, unpacks, counts, classifies, and stores automotive and equipment parts, tools, and supplies; updates tags and computer files.
  • Retrieves computer files to determine stock availability; fills orders and issues items.
  • Researches parts manuals; prepares order forms and submits to supervisor for procurement.
  • Conducts inventories of available parts, materials, and supplies.
  • Prepares defective or broken items for shipment.
  • Operates forklifts and light equipment to retrieve and move parts and supplies.
  • Performs custodial and minor maintenance duties.
  • Maintains regular job attendance according to schedule set by supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the scope of this classification.

Nature of Work:This is responsible work in the operation of a parts room. Work involves the receipt, accountability, issuance, and inventory of various automotive and equipment parts, tools, and supplies. Duties are performed with considerable independence but are subject to review by a superior.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience. High school graduation or its equivalent AND Reasonable experience in a parts warehouse or storeroom.

Special Qualifications:Must possess a valid Class O drivers license. Must possess a forklift operators permit by the end of the probationary period.

Pay Range: $18.91 with step increases to $23.89 Hourly

Benefits: Forty-hour work week. Paid leave per year: twelve days vacation; eighteen days sick; and fourteen holidays. Examination Information: The multiple-choice/written examination will be on October 23, 2026, at 9:00am at the Omaha/Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam Street, 7th floor, room 702. An invitation via email to the exam will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to the test for the position. The test is designed to assess knowledge of the job, skills, and abilities of this position. The passing score on the examination is 60%. This will be weighted 100% in the final score.

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran’s preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by October 23, 2026.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of automotive and mechanical parts, tools, and materials
  • Knowledge of the proper methods, procedures, and record keeping involved in maintaining a parts room
  • Knowledge of the care and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks
  • Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
  • Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide in order to issue and inventory parts, tools, and supplies
  • Ability to read in order to classify, store, and issue parts, tools, and supplies
  • Ability to type in order to enter data into the computer
  • Ability to write in order to indicate assigned numbers on tags
  • Ability to operate a forklift and light automotive equipment
  • Ability to understand written or oral instructions
  • Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, sit, stand, walk, push, pull, and otherwise perform the movements involved in exercising the essential functions of this position for periods of up to eight or more hours
  • Ability to move and store objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds from 10 to 20% of the time
  • Ability to move and store objects exceeding one hundred (100) pounds up to 5% of the time

  • Conducts inventories of available parts, materials, and supplies
  • Completes address labels and prepares defective or broken items for shipment
  • Operates light automotive equipment and forklifts to retrieve and move parts and supplies to various locations in the City
  • Performs custodial and minor maintenance duties
  • Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
