City of SunPrairie’s Youth Services department seeks a part-time staff member to staff the Youth Services Desk, provide reader’s advisory, reference help, and assist with programs and craft preparation.

The role supports collection maintenance, program support, and summer reading activities, with hours including evenings and Saturdays, starting in November. Starting rate is $20.2692/hour, with no benefits.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with related coursework preferred.

Job description

Job duties include but are not limited to: staffing the youth services desk and providing reader’s advisory and reference for patrons of all ages, collection maintenance support, passive program maintenance, program support, summer reading program support, and craft preparation. Hours typically include 1-2 nights per week and approx. 3 Saturdays per month. Start in November. Applicants with coursework or experience in library studies or education preferred.

Approximate start date: November 16th

  • Up to 19 hours per week
  • Must be available Mondays 4:45-9:15, Thursdays 1:15-9:15, and Saturdays 8:45-5:15.

Applicants must have availability during listed hours and some additional flexibility and experience working with children. The ideal candidate will be available Mon/Thur afternoons and evenings and Saturdays, and have some flexibility to fill in other times as needed. Preference will be given to applicants with coursework or experience in library studies, education, and/or child development.

Starting Rate: $20.2692/hour, no benefits.

  • Assists patrons at the Youth Services Desk with a variety of informational and technical needs
  • Performs reader's advisory and ready reference
  • Assists with library programs and patron registration
  • Assists with collection development projects as assigned
  • Maintains a wide variety of displays as assigned
  • Assists patrons with use of computers and other technology
  • Provides direction and guidance to library volunteers
  • Maintains the confidentiality of library records
  • Monitors the youth services department and requests assistance when needed

High school diploma or GED plus one additional year of relevant education or training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills.

Knowledge of
  • Requires knowledge and ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order.
  • Requires working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
Ability to
  • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public in person and on the telephone and maintain effective public relations.
  • Ability to operate library equipment properly, including LinkCat.
Skill in
  • Requires keyboarding, filing, and office programming ability, including word processing and spreadsheets.

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This work is performed in an office environment but does involve lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds and pushing and pulling objects on wheels weighing 60-80 pounds. Flexible work hours with frequent evening and weekend hours.
