Job summary

University of New England invites applications for Adjunct Faculty – Professional Writing Support Specialists to teach SAS 011: Writing Lab, the co-requisite writing support for WRT 110 students. Instructors meet individually in 50-minute sessions, focusing on confidence and independence in academic writing.

Each instructor handles 6–12 students per semester with 6–12 contact hours weekly plus 3–5 hours prep, across 2–3 days. Positions run Aug 29–Dec 18 on BIDDEFORD campus, Maine.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and at least two years of experience teaching or tutoring writing in a secondary or post-secondary setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of academic reading and writing practices, conventions, and genres.
  • Ability to identify and address students’ developmental reading and writing needs.
  • Excellent teaching and motivational skills with the ability to work with individuals and small groups.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of underprepared, struggling, and adult learners.
  • Knowledge of effective learning strategies and tutoring methodologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative approach when working with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based instructional technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct fifteen one-on-one or two-on-one writing support sessions for each assigned student.
  • Provide feedback to encourage and develop students’ reading and writing skills.
  • Develop students’ reading and writing strategies.
  • Review course materials and prompts from First-Year Composition (FYC).
  • Provide oral feedback on drafts and writing tasks for FYC.
  • Coach students on giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Assist with course logistics and organization.
  • Develop tutoring materials and handouts.
  • Monitor and assess student progress throughout the semester.
  • Coordinate with FYC instructors to reinforce objectives.
  • Schedule writing support appointments and maintain records.
