PHYSICS (BL-PHYS-IUBLA)
The Department of Physics is a medium‑sized department in the College of Arts and Sciences (The College), composed of 35 professors, about 100 graduate students, and an undergraduate Physics major population that has doubled in number in the past five years. We offer undergraduate degrees (B.A., B.Sc.) and graduate degrees (Ph.D., M.A.T., M.S.).
These are extraordinary times in physics, with the development of new tools for observing the universe and testing its fundamental laws. Here at Indiana University (IU), we investigate new materials with exotic properties, make use of innovative technologies based on those materials, and gain an emerging ability to control entangled quantum‑mechanical systems.
Our faculty and students engage in research that leads discovery in many areas, both theoretical and applied. We study condensed matter, material science, subatomic particle physics, biological physics, accelerator physics, and astrophysical systems.
Our world‑class faculty strives to develop a strong teaching and research environment, fostering learning and research in several disciplines of physics. We currently have nationally ranked groups in particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter physics, material science, biophysics, and accelerator physics. Research activities are also channeled via institutes and centers such as the Nuclear Theory Center, the Center for Spacetime Symmetries, and the Center for Exploration of Energy and Matter (CEEM), housed in the Multidisciplinary Engineering and Science Hall (MESH).
