Job description

PHYSICS (BL-PHYS-IUBLA)

The Department of Physics is a medium‑sized department in the College of Arts and Sciences (The College), composed of 35 professors, about 100 graduate students, and an undergraduate Physics major population that has doubled in number in the past five years. We offer undergraduate degrees (B.A., B.Sc.) and graduate degrees (Ph.D., M.A.T., M.S.).

These are extraordinary times in physics, with the development of new tools for observing the universe and testing its fundamental laws. Here at Indiana University (IU), we investigate new materials with exotic properties, make use of innovative technologies based on those materials, and gain an emerging ability to control entangled quantum‑mechanical systems.

Our faculty and students engage in research that leads discovery in many areas, both theoretical and applied. We study condensed matter, material science, subatomic particle physics, biological physics, accelerator physics, and astrophysical systems.

Our world‑class faculty strives to develop a strong teaching and research environment, fostering learning and research in several disciplines of physics. We currently have nationally ranked groups in particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter physics, material science, biophysics, and accelerator physics. Research activities are also channeled via institutes and centers such as the Nuclear Theory Center, the Center for Spacetime Symmetries, and the Center for Exploration of Energy and Matter (CEEM), housed in the Multidisciplinary Engineering and Science Hall (MESH).

Responsibilities
  • Takes inventory
  • Helps set up, take down, and maintain the first‑year physics labs
  • Assists with demonstrations and participates in outreach activities, especially the Science Fest and State Science Olympiad
  • May also be called upon to do other tasks in the department, including, but not limited to:
    • Assisting staff with moving furniture and equipment
    • Assisting in developing new labs and demos
    • Providing basic cleaning, dusting, and trash removal
Education
Required
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in at least the second year at Indiana University
Preferred
  • Completion of Physics 2 (P222) course
  • 2 years of coursework remaining
Skills Required

This position will work in a lab setting.

The person in this position must be able to work their assigned schedule.

This position has the potential to be a work‑study position.

Physics labs in Swain West, Bloomington, Indiana.

Schedule & Availability
  • Minimum of 10 hours per week.
  • Availability on Wednesday evenings (typically 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm) and a minimum of 4 hours during the workday on Friday is expected.
  • Depending on experience and skills, additional hours up to 29 hours per week may be available.
  • Other weekday hours can be arranged to fit your schedule.
