Job summary

Indiana University Bloomington's Housing Operations seeks a Student Design Intern to assist the design team with interior design projects, space planning, FF&E coordination, and project documentation on campus.

The role requires current enrollment at IU, preferably junior or senior in Eskenazi School; strong communication; CAD proficiency; and solid organizational skills. Work 10–15 hours weekly, on-site in Bloomington, with a flexible schedule and an hourly rate of $14.00.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a student at Indiana University.
  • Undergraduate in Junior or Senior class at Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; able to work in a team.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or other CAD software.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy; ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Assist designers with interior design and space planning projects.
  • Support FF&E selection and coordination to meet design standards.
  • Conduct field surveys and gather measurements for campus spaces.
  • Maintain material libraries and ensure resources are current.
  • Assist with design presentations, project documentation, and visuals.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS & SERV (BA-RPAS-IUBLA)

Housing Operations supports the on-campus housing and dining for over 12,000 students. We strive to create life-changing experiences by building relationships, developing others, and creating a sense of belonging for our students, their families, and the Indiana University (IU) community.

The Student Design Intern provides support to the design team by assisting with interior design projects, space assessments, furniture and finish selections, and project documentation.

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Assists designers with a variety of interior design and space planning projects.
  • Supports the selection and coordination of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FFandE) to meet project needs and design standards.
  • Conducts field surveys and gathers measurements and existing conditions information for campus spaces.
  • Maintains and organizes material, finish, and sample libraries to ensure resources are current and accessible.
  • Assists with preparing design presentations, project documentation, and visual materials.
  • Supports project research, product sourcing, and specification development.
  • Collaborates with team members to help ensure projects are completed accurately and on schedule.
EDUCATION
Required
  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University.
Preferred
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate in Junior or Senior class standing at Indiana University majoring within the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Preferred
  • Possess a valid driver's license with ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
Skills
Required

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or other computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality.

  • Basic understanding of interior design principles, space planning, and drafting techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain project files, documents, and sample libraries.
Preferred
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Familiarity with Revit, SketchUp, or other 3D modeling software.
  • Knowledge of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FFandE) selection and specification.
  • Experience creating design presentations, renderings, or visual materials.
  • Understanding of sustainable design practices and accessibility standards.
  • Previous coursework or experience in interior design, architecture, environmental design, or a related field.

This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.

Bloomington, Indiana

$14.00 per hour

Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Approximately 10 to 15 hours per week.

Work schedule is flexible and will be coordinated around the student's academic commitments and class schedule.

Specific work hours will be determined in collaboration with the supervisor based on project needs and student availability.
