CAPITAL PLANNING (UA-UART-IUBLA)

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. A unit within CPF, Facility Operations maintains our physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington. As a unit of Capital Planning and Facilities, Facility Operations provides wide-ranging services all with the goal of creating a beautiful, well-functioning campus.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Leads the planning, design, and execution of interior environments across a range of project types and scales.
  • Responsible for developing design solutions that integrate space planning, furnishings, finishes, and building systems while aligning with budget, schedule, regulatory requirements, and university standards.
  • Works collaboratively with Engineering, Trades, vendors, and campus partners to ensure successful project delivery, while exercising independent judgment and problem‑solving throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead the design and delivery of basic and complex interior projects, from initial concept through completion, including space planning, finish selection, furniture integration, and detailed specifications.
  • Independently analyze project requirements, constraints, and opportunities to develop design solutions that balance functionality, aesthetics, cost, and long‑term performance.
  • Prepares and presents design concepts, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and budget recommendations to project stakeholders.
  • Coordinates and manages project implementation, working closely with Engineering, Trades, contractors, vendors, and other campus partners to ensure quality, schedule, and budget objectives are met.
  • Monitors project progress, resolves field conditions and installation issues, and adjusts design solutions as needed to maintain project goals.
  • Serves as a primary point of coordination for interior scope, facilitating communication and problem‑solving across disciplines and stakeholder groups.
  • Provides guidance and support to junior staff, interns, or team members, and contributes to a collaborative and knowledge‑sharing team environment.
  • Participates in the development and refinement of internal standards, workflows, and processes to improve project delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with vendors, manufacturers, and industry partners to support informed design decisions and awareness of emerging trends.
  • Contributes to broader team and departmental initiatives, providing input that supports consistency, quality, and continuous improvement across projects.
General Responsibilities
  • Plans and designs basic and complex interior spaces including design conception, plan drawing, establishing specifications, analyzing available space, determining office equipment and layout, and assessing traffic flow.
  • Performs all of the above within budget limits, adhering to pertinent regulations and building codes.
  • Develops and presents proposals, plans and specifications, cost estimates, and budget recommendations.
  • Oversees project implementation, including engaging Engineering, Trades, and Facility Operations staff and/or independent contractors as needed, and orders necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Reviews and monitors projects in progress to ensure budget control, timely completion, and the compliance of contractors with established standards; assists contractors and craftspeople in resolving problems during installation; and develops and proposes solutions and prepares revised design alterations of modifications as appropriate.
  • Maintains contracts with vendors, manufacturing representatives, contractors, and craftspeople to evaluate projects and ensure awareness of trends in the design field.
  • Maintains design library and resources files.
  • May provide guidance to Interior Design Assistants and lower‑level Interior Designers.
  • May make procedural and process recommendations to supervisor for improved operational efficiency.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in interior design, architecture, or related field
Work Experience
  • 2 years in interior design, architecture, or related field
Required Licenses and Certificates
  • Pass National Council for Interior Design (NCIDQ) Qualification Upon Date of Hire
