Job summary

Summary:

The Part time Shuttle Operator operates a 30,35,40 foot or largercommercial transit bus or any other University owned or leasedvehicle in a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with the U.S.Dept. of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier SafetyRegulations (FMCSR). with specific instructions without detailed orcontinuous supervision incurring additional responsibilities asneeded. This position reports directly to the Supervisor of ShuttleOperations. This position exercises duties with minimal supervisionand is required to maintain awareness of USDOT regulation.Additionally, this position possesses an awareness of the Americanswith Disabilities Act and its implications in the transit industry.The Part Time Shuttle Operator has a working knowledge of theoperation and functions of specialized equipment. (i.e.,handicapped lifts, air brake systems, emergency equipment,etc.).

  • Operates a 30 foot or larger transit bus or any otherUniversity owned or leased vehicle in a safe manner pursuant to theU.S. Dept. of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier SafetyRegulations (FMCSR), while utilizing prescribed standards foroperating handicapped lifts, air brakes, and emergency equipment totransport members of American University in a safe and timelymanner.
  • Communicates and interacts with a diverse passenger base bypracticing customer relations. Serves as an informational resourceby providing route and schedule information, service updates andchanges, and any other information relative to shuttle operationsand the University. Communicates effectively with fellow colleagues(Administrator, Operators, University Police, etc.) via cell phoneor direct connect features in the event of emergencies,disturbances, service updates, etc. following Universityprotocol.
  • Conducts daily regular maintenance and service checks of thetransit buses as required by USDOT- FMCSR, while communicatingvehicle problems to the Supervisor of Shuttle Operations and othermembers of the University, when required.
  • Participates in various activities and training to enhanceorganizational effectiveness within the University with a primaryfocus on adherence to university personnel policies and procedures.Displays awareness and knowledge of transit-related issues andkeeps abreast of these issues via training and professionaldevelopment opportunities. This position must satisfactorilycomplete the required training workshops (ex. Disability Awareness,Substance Abuse Awareness and the Anti-Drug Policy, Wheelchair Liftand Securement Techniques, Shuttle Operator Training).
  • Reports all accidents, incidents, unusual occurrences, and anyother matters that could affect the University to the Supervisor ofShuttle Operations and Public Safety. Completion and submission ofadministrative reports (i.e., route manifests, vehicle inspection,attendance and leave, accident, incident, etc.).

  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience.

  • A minimum of one year successfully demonstrated experienceoperating a commercial motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight ofat least 10,000 pounds and satisfactory work attendance records aredesirable.
