Part Time Prison Education Program Instructor

General Description
SUNY Niagara requires part‑time instructors to teach introductory courses at the Niagara County Holding Center in Lockport, NY. Classes are face‑to‑face, held daily from 9:00 am–10:30 am or 12:30 pm–2:00 pm for MOD15, MOD25, and MOD35 (five‑week courses). Priority is given to instructors able to teach English and/or Math, but all disciplines may apply. Candidates must pass a background check and complete mandatory civilian training at the Niagara County Jail.

Typical Work Activities

  • Teach course curriculum on campus.
  • Track attendance as needed.
  • Report on student learning outcomes at the end of the semester.
  • Report grades at the conclusion of the semester.

Essential Functions
• Ability to work with and teach a diverse student population.
• Ability to speak in front of groups of people.
• Effective communication with students, co‑workers, supervisors, and the campus community.
• Ability to develop, prepare, and present information.
• Ability to operate computers.
• Physical ability to perform duties of the position and adjust teaching to Americans with Disabilities Act provisions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the teaching discipline or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Prior teaching, training, or instructional experience in higher education, adult education, workforce development, or a related setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, including non‑traditional and underserved students.
  • Willingness and ability to comply with all correctional facility rules, regulations, security procedures, and background clearance requirements.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and/or learning management systems appropriate to the assigned discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in the teaching discipline or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching incarcerated, justice‑impacted, adult, or other non‑traditional student populations.
  • Experience with prison education programs, re‑entry programming, workforce development, or adult literacy initiatives.
  • Knowledge of SUNY, community college, or correctional education policies and procedures.
