Join UPMC Shadyside’s Resource Pool! UPMC Shadyside is hiring a Part Time Patient Care Technician to join their team in the Resource Pool.

As a Patient Care Technician, you'll deliver vital patient care and assist with departmental services according to established policies and procedures. Under the guidance of nurses or physicians, you'll maintain high standards of patient care.

About UPMC Shadyside Resource Pool:

The Resource Pool provides ad hoc staffing solutions for nursing units that are reflective of their census and acuity at the time. Resource Staff is made up of two areas: Medical-Surgical/telemetry and ICUs. Working in the Resource Pool requires flexibility, knowledge, and responsiveness. Minimum of one year of direct patient care experience is required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Direct Patient Care: Assist with daily living activities such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients under RN supervision. Perform point-of-care testing including vital signs, blood glucose, weights, urine specimen collection, restraint placement & removal, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), and Foley care.
  2. Environmental Maintenance: Ensure a safe and clean environment by performing safety checks, organizing patient rooms, and managing equipment. Change bed linens, keep hallways clear, and maintain tidiness.
  3. Supplies & Equipment Management: Manage supplies and equipment, handle ordering, stocking, and setup of patient care items.
  4. Communication & Collaboration: Provide feedback to RN, communicate effectively with healthcare team members, and participate in unit activities like responding to call lights and transporting patients.
  5. Documentation & Compliance: Accurately document patient information, complete clerical tasks, and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  6. Continuous Improvement: Receive feedback, identify learning needs, participate in self-review, and support departmental improvements. Follow all patient care and hospital policies.
  7. Emergency Response & Companionship: Respond to emergencies and provide supervision and companionship to patients.

Educational/Knowledge Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of patient care experience
  • Completion of UPMC patient care technician class or basic information system training
  • Microcomputer experience preferred; effective communication skills
  • EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment in such programs is preferred
  • Limited access to medications, only for distribution to nurses

Licensure/Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification per AHA standards within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34 clearance
