Job summary

Huron-Clinton Metroparks in Southeast Michigan seeks a year-round, part-time Interpreter to present interpretive programs to school groups, families and the public, sharing natural and cultural history of the region. You will help plan talks, present lectures, demonstrations and promote public interest in park resources.

Under supervision, you will develop talks, register groups, greet visitors, handle inquiries, and assist with events.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in nature interpretation, environmental education, biology or natural resources management or a related field; Bachelor’s preferred.
• Experience in interpretation, education or a related field preferred.
• Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification or ability to obtain within one year.
• Ability to learn principles and practices used in developing and carrying out a diversified interpretive program.
• Ability to design science education programs that support NGSS and Michigan standards.
• Ability to promote cooperative relationships with educational groups, park visitors and employees.
• Ability to demonstrate creativity and implement new initiatives.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate verbally to give tours, lead programs and presentations.
• Ability to use carpenter, gardening, farming, and artistic tools.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to traverse sandy, marshy and wooded areas.
• Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license.
• May be assigned to work in other parks and districts.
• May adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to perform essential duties.

Responsibilities

• Assist in development and delivery of interpretive presentations to students, families, and the public.
• Promote public interest and participation through talks, lectures, and publicity.
• Work varied schedule, weekends, holidays, and different weather.
• Register groups, create invoices, prepare correspondence, arrange visit logistics.
• Greet visitors, answer questions and provide information on park activities.
• Maintain indoor facilities and outdoor spaces, assist with special events.
