The College for Creative Studies in Detroit is seeking a Part-time Metal Shop & Foundry Technician to help oversee the metal shop and foundry facilities. The position is up to 28 hours per week, primarily evenings 3:30–11 pm, with Saturday and Sunday shifts.

You will train students, staff and faculty in safe operation of metalworking tools and equipment, assist in maintenance, supervise work-study students, and support safety programs while maintaining a clean, compliant work environment.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in metalworking, fabrication, foundry and art processes.
  • Proficiency with computers; 3D CAD and Plasma/Laser Cutter experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Aptitude for learning new skills and techniques.
  • Able to work effectively with a diverse student and faculty population.
  • Educational environment experience preferred.

Job description

STATUS: Part-time, up to 28 hours per week, 9 months/year.
DIVISION: Academic Facilities.
REPORTS TO: Metal Shop and Foundry Manager.
SUPERVISES: N/A.
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt.
Position Description:

The Metal shop & Foundry Technician is responsible for helping to oversee the metal shop and foundry facilities. Technician assists in the training of students, staff, and faculty in the safe and effective use of metal shop and foundry tools, equipment, and machinery. Position will consistently work up to 28 hours per week primarily Evenings from 3:30- 11pm, Saturday from 8 am-7:30 pm and Sunday from 11:45 am-7:30 pm. Additional hours may be scheduled as necessary.

Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions:
  • Must be able to work Evenings, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Provide service and observe the needs of students and faculty utilizing the facility in the fulfillment of their curricular purpose.
  • Assist in routine and unanticipated maintenance of shop tools and equipment.
  • Assist in the supervision of work study students.
  • Assist in safety programs to ensure the proper use of tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Maintain a clean and effective work space.
  • Ensure OSHA safety regulations are being observed and maintained.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • One to three years of experience in a variety of metalworking, fabrication, foundry and art processes.
  • Computer proficiency necessary, 3D CAD and Plasma/Laser Cutter experience preferred. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Aptitude for learning new skills and techniques.
  • Able to work effectively with a diverse student and faculty populace of varying abilities.
  • Educational environment experience preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving parts, and vibration. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Must be able to climb ladders. The employee must frequently lift and move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
