Job summary

Alsip-Merrionette Park Public Library District seeks a Makerspace Assistant to support planning and execution of creative programs for all ages. You’ll assist with equipment, software, and project training, ensuring a welcoming environment and positive patron experiences.

You’ll help deliver teen and adult programs, train staff, and stay ahead of trends to evolve the Makerspace offerings. This role reports to the Adult Services Manager and requires flexibility for varied hours.

Qualifications

• LTA certificate or relevant technology program or equivalent.
• Experience in arts and crafts.
• Experience working with children preferred.
• 2 years of public library experience preferred.
• Available to work days, nights & weekends.

Job description

Position Overview:Under the administration of the Adult Services Manager. Assists in planning and implementation of Makerspace programs and services for all library users. Provides direct support, training, and assistance to patrons of all ages and skill levels in the use of various crafts, machinery, and emerging technologies. Contribute to creating a friendly and positive library experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assists with the maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrading of the Library’s Makerspace computers, software, and peripherals
• Maintains a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the Makerspace
• Provides proactive customer service to library patrons, including: guidance and assistance, recommending appropriate materials/techniques, and instructing on the use of resources and equipment
• Assists with developing and delivering ongoing staff training for the Makerspace and its offerings
• Plans and delivers programs for teens and adults in a public library setting
• Coordinates with other staff on Makerspace usage or media support for shared programs/class visits
• Provides technical support and training for staff and public
• Performs readers advisory and reference services
• Assists with outreach visits and library tours
• Stays informed of emerging trends while recommending plans to evolve and improve the space and service offerings continuously
• Completes research assignments as requested
• May prepare social media promotional material
• Collaborates with colleagues within and across departments
• Other Library duties as assigned

Requirements:

• Experience with a variety of creative technologies and software (including but not limited to photo, video, or sound editing; sewing, embroidery; animation; etc.)
• Proven ability to efficiently use current technology to carry out work routines, including very high proficiency in MS Office, desktop publishing and website design tools
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff in a positive manner
• Ability to take direction and assignments from supervisors
• Willingness to ask questions and seek clarification if unsure of a task
• Willing to accept feedback

  Experience preparing and publishing social media promotions in a public library setting

  • Ability to push book carts weighing up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • May require standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to move and/or lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit

  Qualifications:

  • LTA certificate or relevant technology program or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Experience in arts and crafts required
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • 2 years of public library experience preferred
  • Must be available to work an arrangement of days, nights & weekends

  Hours and Wage:

  • 16 - 18 hours per week
  • $18.00 per hour
