Job summary

The Lifeguard at YMCA of South Hampton Roads ensures safe swimming conditions across the pool and surrounding areas, creating a safe, positive environment for members. They follow YMCA policies and procedures while monitoring water depth and performing preventive maintenance.

They respond to emergencies, document incidents, and maintain records, building strong relationships with guests and staff. The role requires ongoing certifications, daily chemical testing, and adherence to all safety

Qualifications

• YMCA Lifeguard or ARC Lifeguard certification.
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent).
• Ability to maintain certification-level readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
• Maintain all required certifications and trainings.
• Minimum age 16; age guidelines for 16–17 still apply.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions with constant surveillance.
• Review emergency procedures and respond immediately per policies.
• Maintain positive relationships with members and staff.
• Apply safety rules and guidelines for pool areas.
• Keep accurate records as required by YMCA and Health Dept.
• Perform equipment checks and ensure available equipment.
• Check pool for hazards on arrival.
• Perform routine chemical testing and take action.
• Handle maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.
• Attend meetings and trainings as required.
• Adhere to YMCA policies and standards.
• Participate in all safety, cleanliness, and uniform procedures.
• Assist in all areas and complete projects as assigned.
