Job summary

The Cranford Public Library is seeking a Library Assistant to work in the Children’s Department on a part-time basis. The role involves assisting with patron services, updating the collection, and performing related tasks under supervision.

The position averages 12 hours per week, with afternoon shifts (primarily 1-5 pm) on Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, plus Wednesday evenings and multiple weekend shifts (Sat 9-5 or Sun 11:30-4). The library is in Union County and part of regional library consortia.

Qualifications

• At least one year of public library circulation and customer service experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
• Ability to assist patrons with library app use and material searches.
• Able to operate library equipment and maintain shelves.

Responsibilities

• Greet patrons at the library.
• Answer the phone and refer calls to the appropriate extension.
• Check materials in and out.
• Assist patrons with library app use and material searches.
• Collect fines and fees.
• Place requests for materials.
• Pull daily list of requested materials.
• Register patrons and assist with online registration.
• Answer basic questions and refer inquiries to appropriate departments.
• Check shelves for items.
• Shelve materials, tidy shelves, and file by call number and alphabetical order.
• Rearrange and move collections as needed for new materials.
• Assist with acquisition and maintenance of the collections.
• Assist with events for children and families.
• Perform additional related tasks as requested by supervisor or staff.
