Job summary

The University of Tennessee – Knoxville invites applications for part-time faculty to serve as Lecturer in the School of Architecture beginning August 2026. Part-time faculty teach one or two courses per academic year and are compensated on a per-course basis.

Job description

The University of Tennessee – Knoxville (UTK) invites applications for part-time faculty to serve as Lecturer in the School of Architecture beginning August 2026. While the School of Architecture faculty is predominantly made up of full-time faculty, we regularly seek to engage motivated practitioners and/or emerging educators to join the part-time faculty pool. The School of Architecture is committed to supporting part-time faculty with opportunities for mentorship and advancement, including opportunities to build or expand a teaching portfolio, apply for full-time positions, and seek promotion to higher rank. Part-time faculty are eligible to apply for resources to support publication, travel, and research. Part-time faculty most often teach one or two courses per academic year and are compensated on a per-course basis. Teaching assignments may include design studios and/or required lecture, seminar, or technology courses. Part-time faculty are invited to faculty meetings and can play an advisory role in the shared governance of the School. Multiple in‑person positions are available.

Successful candidates will demonstrate potential as design instructors capable of contributing expertise to our professionally accredited Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture curricula. Successful candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm for bringing their own voice, style, and ideas to studio courses that are coordinated by a faculty colleague who establishes the syllabus structure, schedule, and shared learning goals across multiple studio sections. This arrangement supports faculty who are new or newly returning to teaching while providing the creative autonomy to develop and deliver original assignments and establish the culture of their own studio section. As well, University policy dictates that each applicant for a part‑time position is required to already have work eligibility in the United States. No visa sponsorship is available for this role.

Areas of Expertise

While all areas of expertise within the discipline of architecture are welcome to apply, the School especially seeks candidates capable of exceptional teaching in undergraduate and graduate studios that address design foundations, building tectonics, construction representation, and sustainability.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold at least one of the following: an undergraduate degree in architecture and a graduate degree in architecture or a related field; a NAAB‑accredited degree in architecture; or a doctoral degree in architecture or a related field.

Desired Qualifications

On Teaching

• Teaching experience in the university setting, including as a TA
• Experience with or ability to implement experimental teaching in terms of modality, methodology, and/or format

Creative Practice and Design Excellence

• A portfolio of architectural design demonstrating innovation, quality, and experimentation
• A creative practice that contributes to the discipline of architecture through tool‑making, critique, prototyping, or other forms of creative activity
• Professional licensure
