The role will lead an initial comprehensive evidence-room audit, strengthen procedures, and ensure accurate day-to-day management while maintaining strict chain of custody, security, and confidentiality.

The position is part-time, civilian, non-sworn, reporting to the Chief of Police or designee, with ~10 hours per week and a pay rate of $27.50

Qualifications

Police Department Evidence Custodian (Part-Time)

The City of Three Rivers Police Department is seeking a highly organized, trustworthy, and detail-focused Evidence Custodian to protect the integrity of property and evidence in Department custody. This civilian role will lead an initial comprehensive evidence-room audit, strengthen procedures, and provide accurate day-to-day evidence management while maintaining strict chain of custody, security, and confidentiality.

Position Snapshot

  • Part-time, civilian / non-sworn position
  • Reports to the Chief of Police or designee
  • Expected schedule: Approximately 10 hours/week
  • Pay: $27.50/hour
Key Responsibilities
Initial Audit & Continuous Improvement
  • Conduct a comprehensive initial audit and inventory of the evidence and property room; reconcile physical items with records and the evidence-management system.
  • Identify and document missing, misplaced, mislabeled, improperly packaged, undocumented, or otherwise discrepant items and work with the Chief of Police or designee to resolve findings.
  • Review storage, security, access, retention, and chain-of-custody practices; prepare written findings and practical recommendations.
  • Help develop, update, and implement evidence/property policies, forms, and standard operating procedures; identify recurring issues and training needs.
Evidence & Property Management
  • Receive, document, package, label, store, safeguard, retrieve, transfer, release, and dispose of evidence and property in accordance with Department policy and applicable law.
  • Maintain complete records of each item's location, status, movement, chain of custody, and final disposition.
  • Keep storage areas organized and secure, including appropriate handling of firearms, drugs, currency, biological or perishable materials, valuables, chemicals, sharp objects, and other specialized evidence.
  • Research cases and coordinate authorized return, destruction, forfeiture, conversion, or other lawful disposition of evidence and property.
Laboratory, Records & Coordination
  • Prepare, transport, and retrieve evidence for Michigan State Police Laboratories and other authorized facilities while preserving chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Coordinate submissions with investigating officers and laboratory personnel; track submitted evidence through its return to Department custody.
  • Maintain confidential law-enforcement records, access credentials, keys, and evidence-management systems; immediately report discrepancies, damage, missing evidence, or security concerns.
  • Provide records and testimony for audits, inspections, court proceedings, and other authorized reviews; communicate professionally with officers, prosecutors, courts, laboratories, agencies, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a Department vehicle for authorized duties.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Department's background investigation and other required pre-employment screening.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, detailed records, sound judgment, and consistently high accuracy.
  • Strong organization and communication skills; ability to work independently and learn computerized records and evidence-management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional education or specialized training in criminal justice, evidence management, records management, or a related field.
  • Five years of evidence management, property-room, or law-enforcement records experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate should possess, or be able to develop, knowledge of:

  • Evidence/property management principles and chain-of-custody requirements.
  • Evidence packaging, labeling, storage, documentation, inventory, auditing, retention, and authorized disposition procedures.
  • Confidentiality and security requirements for law-enforcement records and evidence.
  • Basic computer applications and electronic records-management systems.
Physical & Working Conditions

This position may require standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing, lifting, carrying, and moving evidence containers and property. Work may involve firearms, controlled substances, biological materials, chemicals, sharp objects, odors, or other potentially hazardous materials. Required training and personal protective equipment will be provided or used as appropriate. Periodic travel to laboratories, courts, law-enforcement agencies, disposal facilities, and other authorized locations is required.
