Job summary

Kansas City Public Library is seeking an English Language Instructor to teach multiple weekly classes designed to improve English language skills across topics such as English Basics, Driver’s License prep, Financial Literacy, CNA English, and Citizenship. The role is part-time with benefits and a $20.28 hourly rate.

Classes are held at the North-East Branch, with two 20-hour weekly schedules. Candidates should have TEFL/TESOL/TESL certification and at least two years of teaching experience,

Qualifications

• Experience with literacy coaching, language learning, or tutoring.
• Must have good classroom management skills.
• Must be able to work with and accommodate students of different skill levels at once.
• Experience working with non-native English-speaking persons.
• Experience working with volunteers.
• Must have a desire and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, empathy, and cultural awareness.
• Proficiency in English required; multilingual abilities in the Jackson County area are a plus.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and advanced computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Be familiar with the English language development curriculum provided by the Library.
• Prepare adequately for classes each week.
• Provide quality English Language Development instruction to participants.
• Record attendance according to department procedure.
• Ensure the classroom is open, welcoming, and inclusive.
• Work with volunteer tutors to present a cohesive and inviting environment.
• Hold classes at the North-East Branch at various times of the day.
