Job summary

Virginia Community Colleges in Norfolk seeks a part-time Child Development Center Assistant Teacher to support Lead Teachers, help implement planned lessons, and help maintain a safe, healthy classroom.

You will supervise children aged 6 weeks to 12 years, help with meals, document feedback for families, and ensure proper supervision ratios while adhering to Virginia licensing standards and NAEYC guidelines.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age with high school completion or equivalent.
• Child development credential as required by VA code.
• Ability to supervise children from 6 weeks to 12 years old.
• Knowledge of activity planning and special events for child development centers.
• Ability to communicate with children using approved development techniques.
• Ability to communicate with parents, faculty and staff.
• Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing children’s materials and play areas.
• Ability to lift and maintain 40 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Assist with implementation of planned lessons to support learning and child development.
• Support health and safety measures in the classroom.
• Supervise mealtimes reflecting family-style dining and ensure supervision of children.
• Maintain appropriate child-to-teacher ratios.
• Prepare and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials.
• Interact with children using approved guidance techniques.
• Observe for illness or suspected abuse and report as directed.
• Provide daily feedback to parents about child activities.
