Job summary

County of Volusia seeks a part-time Bridgetender for the Road & Bridge Division to operate and maintain a draw bridge, ensuring safe passage for water traffic. The role requires adherence to US Coast Guard regulations and Florida statutes, with duties including logging, daily reports, and VHF radio communications.

The candidate must be able to swim, climb bridge stairs, and handle ladders. Shifts run from midnight to 8:00 am with rotating days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• Must have completed 8th grade.

Responsibilities

• Maintains a lookout for boats and operates bridge in response to signals.
• Inspects mechanical and electrical devices on the bridge to ensure proper working order.
• Summons assistance for mechanical repairs when needed.
• Turns bridge lights on/off at proper times and replaces burned out bulbs.
• Maintains records of bridge openings and activities.
• May be assigned to other county locations based on operational needs.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Responds to emergency situations.
