Job description

Description

Family Promise of Aiken County Family Promise of Aiken County is a growing nonprofit dedicated to preventing and ending family homelessness in our community. Through individualized coaching, financial assistance, and community partnerships, we help families overcome housing crises and build lasting stability. As our community's needs grow, so does our need for sustainable funding. We are looking for a mission-driven development professional who wants to turn relationships into resources, and resources into real change for local families. If you want meaningful work, significant autonomy, and the opportunity to directly shape the future of a growing nonprofit, this may be the role for you.

The Opportunity

The Director of Development leads Family Promise's fundraising and donor engagement efforts, with responsibility for growing and diversifying revenue through individual giving, grants, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, campaigns, and events. This is a highly autonomous, self-directed position. Because we are a small nonprofit, everyone wears many hats. We value people who see what needs to be done, take initiative, work efficiently, and move projects forward without needing constant direction. At the same time, you will not be doing this alone. The Executive Director, Board Development Committee, and engaged Board members provide significant partnership, relationships, volunteer support, and strategic guidance to help make this role successful.

Primary Areas of Responsibility

Time and priorities will vary throughout the year based on fundraising cycles, grant deadlines, campaigns, events, and organizational needs.

  • Fundraising Strategy & Revenue:
    • Develop and execute an annual fundraising plan aligned with organizational priorities.
    • Grow and diversify revenue through individual giving, grants, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, campaigns, and events.
    • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects.
    • Monitor results and adjust strategies to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Donor & Community Engagement:
    • Build meaningful relationships with donors, businesses, foundations, churches, and community partners.
    • Serve as an ambassador for Family Promise in the community.
    • Develop compelling donor communications and stories that demonstrate our impact.
  • Grants, Campaigns & Events:
    • Identify and pursue appropriate grant opportunities and manage submissions and deadlines.
    • Lead fundraising campaigns and events, coordinating staff, Board members, volunteers, and community partners.
    • Develop sponsorship opportunities and secure corporate and community support.
  • Board & Organizational Collaboration:
    • Partner with the Executive Director to align fundraising with programmatic and organizational priorities.
    • Work closely with the Board Development Committee and engage Board members strategically in fundraising and community outreach.
    • Provide clear updates on fundraising progress, opportunities, and challenges.
    • Delegate effectively and build sustainable fundraising capacity.
Qualifications

Who Will Thrive Here We are looking for someone who:

  • Has at least three years of nonprofit development or fundraising experience and a record of success.
  • Is an exceptional relationship builder and communicator.
  • Takes initiative and works confidently with minimal supervision.
  • Balances independence with collaboration: welcoming feedback, responding to direction, and adapting to changing priorities from the Executive Director and Board.
  • Thinks strategically but is comfortable rolling up their sleeves.
  • Works efficiently, manages time well, and focuses on results rather than activity.
  • Is energized by variety and comfortable wearing multiple hats.
  • Believes deeply in the dignity and potential of every family.
  • Experience with grants, individual giving, corporate partnerships, events, donor databases, or volunteer boards is highly valued.
  • Experience in housing, human services, or family-serving nonprofits is a plus.
Schedule & Compensation

This is a flexible, part-time position, with hours varying based on workload, fundraising cycles, events, grant deadlines, and organizational priorities. Much of the work can be completed independently and remotely; however, availability during normal business hours is required for internal meetings and meetings with donors, Board members, community partners, and other external stakeholders. Occasional evening or weekend availability may be needed for fundraising events and community engagement. We value flexibility and expect accountability in return. As responsible stewards of donor dollars, we need someone who prioritizes well, works efficiently, and delivers results. Success is measured by impact and outcomes, not simply hours worked. Performance-based bonuses are available for achieving agreed-upon fundraising goals. As Family Promise grows, there is potential for this role to expand in hours and responsibility based on organizational needs, fundraising success, and available resources.

Reporting Structure

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director, with a dotted-line relationship to the Board Development Committee.
