Job summary

Middlebury College seeks a Director for the Middlebury Language School of Japanese. The role requires summer residence on campus to oversee the instructional and co-curricular program and may teach one course.

During the academic year, the Director plans curriculum remotely, hires faculty and summer staff, evaluates and publicizes the program, and assists with student recruitment and admissions. Initial appointment is for three years, renewable on satisfactory performance.

Qualifications

• Senior faculty rank with tenure or tenure-track credentials at an established institution.
• Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and strong English communication skills.
• Experience with second-language pedagogy, including instructional technology.
• Advanced research and teaching in a language, humanities, or social science field related to the school.
• Substantial language teaching experience at the postsecondary level.
• Experience directing or coordinating a language program or area studies department.
• Demonstrated administrative skills, including budget management and hiring/supervising staff.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; commitment to an inclusive immersion community.
• Commitment to the Language Pledge and willingness to reside on campus for the summer session.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the summer instructional and co-curricular program and may teach one course.
• During the year, work remotely to plan curriculum, hire faculty and summer staff, and publicize the program.
• Assist with student recruitment and oversee the admissions process.
• Prepare Annual Reports; evaluate performance and establish goals with the Dean of Language Schools.
• Ensure effective operation, quality instruction, fiscal responsibility, curricular development, and student satisfaction.
