Job summary

Town of Smithfield, NC is seeking a part-time skilled mechanic to perform automotive, construction, and equipment repairs in our garage. You will diagnose and service a range of engines, brakes, electrical, and hydraulic systems, using essential tools and lifting equipment.

Qualifications include an associate degree in diesel systems tech or equivalent experience, with 2–10 years in related repair work, and a valid NC commercial driver’s license within six months. This role is < 30 hours/week.

Qualifications

• Associate’s or technical degree in diesel systems technology with automotive mechanics coursework and 2–5 years of repair experience.
• High school diploma with mechanical/electrical coursework and 7–10 years of repair experience.
• Equivalent mix of education and hands-on automotive, construction, and small engines work.
• Must possess or obtain a valid commercial class B North Carolina driver’s license within six months.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, adjust, repair, and service cars, trucks, and small engines and related equipment.
• Repair brakes, ignition, fuel, hydraulic, and differential systems; service wheel alignments.
• Operate lifts, tire changers, air tools, battery chargers, and other hand/garage tools.
• Fabricate replacement parts and body components as needed using grinders and sanders.
• Perform electrical work such as diagnosing shorts and replacing wiring or lights.
• Keep tools and garage area clean and organized.
