Job summary

Massachusetts Department of Mental Health is seeking a Contracted Interpreter for the Deaf for a 20-hour per week position in Worcester. The role involves in-person and remote interpreting and requires coordinating with Deaf staff and others for effective communication access.

Hours are Tue and Thu 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM with varying Wednesday shifts and occasional remote meetings. Compensation is hourly and paid biweekly; benefits are limited.

Qualifications

• Two years of interpretation/transliteration experience for Deaf/Hard of Hearing preferred.
• Knowledge of English registers and ASL (and other signed forms).
• Bilingual or multilingual fluency beyond ASL/English is a plus.
• Technical vocabularies in English and ASL are advantageous.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an Interpreter Training Program; relevant certifications or screening accepted.

Responsibilities

• Provide in-person and remote interpreting/transliteration services for meetings, trainings, and events.
• Maintain professional standards per RID Code of Ethics.
• Collaborate with interpreters and Deaf staff; review materials ahead of assignments.
• Proficient with Teams, Zoom, Outlook, and other remote-work tools.
• Assist with scheduling freelance interpreters when needed.
