The City of Fairview Heights Public Works Department is hiring a part time custodian. The current hourly wage for this position is $16.91/hour. Applications are due to [e-mail] by 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2025.

Summary Of Position

This position involves performing general maintenance of City building facilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (Essential functions including the following and the Physical Requirements listed below):

Report any maintenance problems or hazards in municipal buildings to supervisory personnel

Secure exterior and interior doors to building as required and unlock doors for meetings and events

Gather and properly dispose of bloodborne wastes and hazardous materials

Clean/sanitize areas potentially contaminated by bloodborne pathogens from body fluids

Clean and sanitize public restrooms

Maintain tiled floors by mopping and cleaning, and maintain carpeted areas by vacuuming at the established frequency

Stock and distribute paper janitorial supplies (toilet paper, hand towels, etc) as required

Stock coffee and related supplies for meetings and make coffee for participants as required

Record use of supplies and provide records to supervisors

Clean offices and public areas as required

Remove trash and garbage wastes from offices and public areas to dumpster

Operate and properly maintain janitorial equipment

Maintain floor drains based on established maintenance and cleaning requirements

Maintain exterior entrances to the building for appearance and safety

Other related janitorial and custodial duties as assigned

Basic Job Qualifications

High School Graduate or equivalent

One year of experience in commercial building custodial maintenance

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required

General knowledge of building maintenance procedures

Ability to work productively with all operations in city government

Ability work independently after receiving general written and oral instructions

General knowledge of operating requirements and maintenance procedures for building maintenance equipment, including buffing machine, scrubbing machine, vacuum cleaners, wet-vacs, and basic maintenance tools

Knowledge of safety procedures in handling bloodborne materials and disposal and use and storage of chemicals

Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and responsibilities to accomplish assignments based on general directions from supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed alone in municipal buildings. Work performed in this job may place the employee at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis

Ability to life up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis

Ability to lift arms overhead, bend at the waist, kneel, stretch
