Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Career Development, Education, or related field; Master's preferred.
• 1–3 years in academic advising, career services, student success, counseling, or related student support.
• Knowledge of career development theories and advising practices.
• Experience with diverse student populations in higher education or community organizations.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
• Experience using SIS/CRM or advising technologies.
• Ability to analyze student data and provide proactive interventions.
• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive advising.

Responsibilities

• Utilize holistic advising practices to assist students with academic, career, transfer, and personal goals.
• Guide students through career exploration using labor market information and career planning tools.
• Connect academic programs to career pathways and employment opportunities.
• Conduct proactive outreach to students identified through alerts and retention campaigns.
• Help students develop Academic and Career Success Plans aligning education with long-term goals.
• Advise on academic policies, including attendance, grades, and withdrawals.
• Refer students to campus/community resources addressing barriers to persistence.
• Collaborate with faculty and student support offices to coordinate interventions.
• Follow up to monitor progress and encourage continued enrollment.
• Facilitate career advising sessions, workshops, and career readiness programming.
• Participate in enrollment initiatives and orientation activities.
• Maintain accurate case notes in student success software.
• Demonstrate multicultural competence and foster belonging.
• Participate in department and college-wide meetings.

Advising & LifeMap is a team of advisors, pathway coaches, career specialists, student mentors, and administrators who support and guide students in achieving their academic, career, transfer, and personal goals. Through a holistic advising approach, the Career Advising Specialist empowers students to connect their education to meaningful careers while providing proactive outreach and support that promotes persistence, retention, and completion.

Reporting to the Director of Advising & LifeMap (or appropriate supervisor), the Career Advising Specialist integrates career development with proactive student success strategies to help students clarify goals, overcome barriers, persist toward completion, and prepare for meaningful careers. Through individualized coaching, intentional outreach, and cross-campus collaboration, this role helps students understand the connection between their education and future employment while supporting their academic persistence from enrollment through completion.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Utilize holistic advising practices to assist students in identifying academic, career, transfer, and personal goals.
• Guide students through career exploration using labor market information, career assessments, Career Coach, and other career planning resources.
• Assist students in connecting academic programs, certificates, and credentials to career pathways and employment opportunities.
• Conduct proactive outreach to students identified through early alerts, retention campaigns, and career engagement initiatives.
• Help students develop individualized Academic and Career Success Plans that integrate educational planning with long-term career goals.
• Provide advising related to academic policies, including non-attendance grades, midterm warning grades, academic standing, withdrawals, and college procedures.
• Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources that address academic, financial, personal, wellness, and basic needs barriers affecting persistence.
• Collaborate with faculty, pathway coaches, retention staff, financial aid, accessibility services, transfer services, and other student support offices to coordinate interventions.
• Conduct follow-up outreach to monitor student progress, remove barriers, and encourage continued enrollment and completion.
• Facilitate individual and group career advising sessions, workshops, classroom presentations, and career readiness programming.
• Participate in enrollment and student success initiatives including Start Now, registration events, orientation, welcome activities, and major fairs.
• Maintain accurate case notes and documentation within the college's student success and retention software.
• Demonstrate multicultural competence and maintain an educational environment that reflects the College's commitment to belonging and student success.
• Participate in departmental, division and college wide meetings as needed.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Career Development, Education, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
• One to three years of experience in academic advising, career services, student success, retention, counseling, workforce development, or related student support services.
• Knowledge of career development theories and advising practices.
• Experience working with diverse student populations in higher education or community-based organizations.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
• Experience utilizing student information systems, CRM platforms, or advising technologies.
• Ability to analyze student data and provide proactive interventions.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive advising.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience at a community college.
• Knowledge of Guided Pathways and holistic student support models.
• Familiarity with Career Coach, TargetX/Student Success CRM, Transferology, Handshake, Ellucian Self-Service, or similar systems.
• Experience facilitating workshops or career development programming.
• Familiarity with workforce trends, labor market information, and employer engagement.

Additional Information:

Salary: $36.55 an hour for 18.5 hours a week. Part-Time Non-Benefited position.
