Job summary

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy seeks a part-time attorney/instructor to serve as a hearing officer for law enforcement certification contested hearings and to draft final agency decisions and notices.

Under general supervision, you will write hearing officer recommendations, schedule hearings, and perform related assignments for the Academy's General Counsel Unit. Excellent legal writing and communication skills required.

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy), General Counsel Unit, is currently seeking a part-time attorney/instructor to perform the following job functions.

  • Sit as a hearing officer for law enforcement certification contested case hearings, which are held pursuant to the Administrative Procedures Act and the South Carolina Rules of Evidence.
  • Write a hearing officer recommendation, which will be submitted to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council for review. Draft the final agency. decision based on the Law Enforcement Training Council's decision.
  • Draft hearing notices to schedule law enforcement certification contested case hearings.
  • Performs other assignments & projects assigned by Chief General Counsel.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

Minimum requirements include:

  • Juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school
  • Active member of the SC Bar
  • Completion of Rule 403 requirements
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience as a practicing attorney

  • Must understand the contested case hearing process.
  • Must be able to draft hearing notices and hearing officer recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team while exercising sound judgment.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work some evenings and holidays, as needed.
