Job summary

The Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools serve more than 40,000 students in 154 elementary and high schools in Cook and Lake counties. The St. Viator Elementary School Athletic Director is responsible for the overall leadership,
coordination, and administration of the school’s interscholastic sports programs. This position
serves as the key liaison between coaches, parents, students, and the school administration
and is responsible for ensuring that the athletic program aligns with the school’s educational
mission, values, and student development goals.

  • Serve as a liaison between coaches, parents, student-athletes, school staff, and administrators to ensure clear, effective communication.
  • Develop and maintain a local athletic handbook (following the Archdiocese of Chicago “Handbook for Athletic Directors) outlining the program philosophy, academic and behavior expectations for student-athletes, and codes of conduct for coaches, parents, and volunteers.
  • Clearly communicate the athletic program’s philosophy to all stakeholders and ensure consistent adherence.
  • Attend mandatory meetings for Chicago Catholic Youth League (CCYL) and St. Viator Athletic Association. Willingness to attend and represent the school at any relevant sports related activities.
  • Serve as Commissioner of St. Viator Volleyball League Invitational

Coach & Volunteer Management

  • Set and enforce criteria for the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and ongoing monitoring of all coaches.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and supervise all program volunteers, including assistants, scorekeepers, and event staff.
  • Ensure all coaches and volunteers adhere to safety guidelines and conduct expectations.
  • Ensure any coach without a valid teaching certificate completes the IESA-approved coaching education program (IESA Coaching Essentials), and track completion of DCFS
    mandated reporter training and fingerprint-based background checks for all coaches and
    volunteers.
  • Determine school participation in athletic leagues and serve as the school’s representative in league meetings.
  • Make decisions regarding team formation based on registration numbers, player eligibility, and skill levels.
  • Decide athlete eligibility for participation in multiple sports during a single season in
    alignment with school policy.

Scheduling & Event Planning

  • Develop and coordinate practice, game, and tournament schedules with the Athletics
    Association Board Members and Volunteers.
  • Communicate all schedules to coaches, parents, and relevant school staff in a timely manner.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of all athletic events and ensure adequate staffing and supervision.
  • Prepare and present an annual budget for the athletic program for approval by the Principal. AD will collaborate with the Athletics Association Board Treasurer.
  • Set and manage participation fees and ensure expenditures comply with local fiscal guidelines.
  • Submit timely and accurate financial reports to the Principal and/or Pastor.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Establish, communicate, and enforce standards of safety for all athletic activities and facilities.
  • Develop and disseminate an Emergency Plan for unplanned events or injuries during practices or games.
  • Serve on or coordinate the school's Concussion Oversight Team and ensure compliance with 105 ILCS 25/1 concussion-safety requirements, including tracking Biennial Certification for all coaches and the AD.
  • Collaborate with the Sergeant at Arms Board Member to support the Rec Center Safety and Risk Management.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest and background in athletics and youth development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to step in when coaches are not available in order to maintain programming.
  • Experience in education, coaching, or athletic program administration is preferred.
  • Must complete Illinois concussion certification (via NFHS Learn or the IESA/IHSA
    concussion program) prior to the start date, and renew biennially thereafter, per the
    Illinois Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act.
  • Must complete DCFS mandated reporter training and the Archdiocese of Chicago's
    Protecting God's Children (VIRTUS) certification, along with a fingerprint-based criminal
    background check, prior to the start date.
  • Availability during after-school hours and weekends as needed.

This position has an hourly range of $18.00 - $20.00. An employee’s pay within the hourly range will be based on many factors including but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
