Job Description

Purpose and Scope

Under moderate supervision, the Part Time Assistant II, Biotech Labposition is responsible for multiple functions in Biotechnologylaboratory preparation. Activities involve a variety of routinetasks such as cleaning glassware, and cleaning and maintaining thelaboratory, and many non-routine tasks that require independentjudgment to resolve lab-related issues. The position requires thedependable and accurate preparation of materials, equipment,reagents and buffers to exacting specifications required forsuccessful student laboratory investigations. Responsibilities mayinclude tracking laboratory chemicals, supplies and equipment.Position refers problems to experts as needed.

Essential Job Functions

1. Supports faculty, staff and the lab coordinator in the timelyand accurate preparation of labs for multiple biotechnology classesincluding Intro to Biotechnology, Lab Methods and Techniques, LabInstrumentation, Molecular Biology Techniques, MedicalBiotechnology, Principles of Biochemistry and Cell CultureTechniques
2. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment includingautoclaves, centrifuges, incubators, PCR equipment,spectrophotometers, HPLC equipment, 96 well plate reader andwasher, laminar flow hoods, fume hoods, microscopes and variousother biotech related lab equipment
3. Prepares complex chemical and microbiological reagentsaccording to standards and protocols
4. Ensures that safety and quality assurance practices arefollowed
5. Provides assistance in proper disposal of chemical andbiohazardous waste
6. Provides assistance with yearly computerized laboratorysupplies and equipment inventory
7. Provides routine lab support including cleaning equipment andcleaning, organizing and restocking of labs, washing glassware andtracking supplies inventory
8. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties asassigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to achieve precise micropipetting and accurate weighingand measuring
• Ability to follow laboratory procedures, manuals and SOPs
• Must be computer literate and able to use Microsoft Word, Exceland Outlook
• Strong math and chemistry skills
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
• Ability to work well both individually and as part of ateam
• Effective communication skills with students, faculty, staff,and Program Director
• Flexible and creative to perform multiple taskssimultaneously

Physical Abilities

The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods ofstanding; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching,reaching, or similar activities; or ability to lift moderatelyheavy items, such as boxes of supplies or equipment. The work mayrequire specific, but common, physical characteristics andabilities, such as above average agility and dexterity

Work Schedule and Conditions

• The work involves moderate regular exposure to hazardous itemssuch as chemical, biological, and electrical hazards. This exposurerequires special safety precautions. Employees may be required touse protective clothing or gear, such as masks, lab coats, goggles,gloves, or shields.
