Job summary

Vance Thompson Vision is seeking a registered nurse to join our perioperative team at the Alexandria Surgery Center in Alexandria, MN. You will gather patient histories, perform pre-operative assessments, educate patients, and coordinate with surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure a safe, efficient surgical experience.

The role emphasizes patient safety, collaboration across perioperative teams, and adherence to nursing standards.

Qualifications

  • Completed an accredited RN program from a university or technical school.
  • Current, valid RN license in the state of practice.
  • Previous experience in a hospital and/or surgery center.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain patients’ medical history and perform a physical assessment for assigned patients.
  • Initiate a patient education plan according to individual needs and practice policy; explain procedures and treatments to gain cooperation.
  • Observe patients, record vital signs, and notify the physician of significant changes.
  • Maintain patient comfort and safety and respond to emergency situations per nursing standards.
  • Prepare the patient for anticipated surgical procedures, including informed consent and pre-operative assessment.
  • Coordinate with the circulating nurse, recovery room nurse, anesthesia care provider, and surgeon for a safe surgical experience.
  • Assess patient recovery and safety after anesthesia and surgery.
  • Ensure patients understand post-operative care requirements; collaborate with perioperative staff and surgeon.

You Will Make an Impact By:
  • Obtaining patients’ medical history and performing physical assessment for assigned patients.
  • Initiating a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by Physician and/or practice policy including patient and family instruction; explains procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation, understanding and alleviate apprehension.
  • Observing patients, recording significant conditions and reactions and notifies Physician of patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents; takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of patient.
  • Maintaining awareness of comfort and safety needs of patients; responds to emergency situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
  • Being responsible for preparing the patient for the anticipated surgical procedure, including obtaining an informed consent, completing a pre-operative patient assessment, and performing any procedure or administering medications required to prepare the patient for surgery
  • Communicating with the circulating nurse, the recovery room nurse, the anesthesia care provider, and the surgeon to coordinate a safe and comfortable surgical experience.
  • Being responsible for patient assessment and maintaining the patient’s safety in recovering from anesthetic and surgical medications
  • Ensuring that the patient understands their post-operative care requirements.
  • Collaborating with other perioperative nursing staff, anesthesia care providers and the surgeon.
You Have:
  • Successfully completed an accredited Registered Nursing (RN) program from a university or technical school
  • A current, valid RN license within the state of practice
  • Previous experience in a hospital and/or surgery center
