Job summary

YMCA of Greater Birmingham seeks part-time Afterschool Care counselors to supervise and engage groups of children Monday through Friday after school, until 6:00 p.m. at various sites, including Paine, Cahaba, and Magnolia.

You will lead activities aligned with YMCA curriculum, maintain safety standards, and build positive relations with families while attending required trainings and meetings.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18 years
• HS Diploma; College level education in one of these areas is preferred
• Prior experience in education, recreation, physical education, teaching or childcare preferred
• Must be available Monday-Friday from school dismissal to 6:00 p.m. on school days
• Background and Child Abuse and Neglect screening completed
• First Aid/ CPR /AED certifications required (valid 2 years)
• Requisite Risk Management/Safety Online Training Modules completed before start date and repeated annually

Responsibilities

• Engages and supervises a group of children. Program hours are Monday - Friday from school dismissal to 6:00 pm.
• Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA core curriculum components.
• Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
• Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
• Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.
• Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
