Job description

Part‑Time (25hrs/week) Immigration Attorney — EOIR Docket Management atDM Legal (we are a small, solo firm)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced immigration attorney to manage the day‑to‑day progress of our EOIR docket of approximately 175 removal cases. You will work closely with the Managing Attorney and an established paralegal team to keep cases organized, deadlines protected, and matters ready for hearings. This is a hands‑on case management role requiring removal defense experience, sound legal judgment, and consistent follow‑through. The Managing Attorney (Me) handles the EOIR legal writing, with paralegals assisting with formatting and preparation. You may be needed to assist with SOME substantive motion writing when emergencies arise.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain oversight of the EOIR docket, hearing calendar, filing deadlines, and case preparation milestones.
  • Review court orders and case status updates, identify required next steps, and ensure tasks are assigned and completed.
  • Review files for procedural issues, missing evidence, incomplete applications, and matters requiring attorney attention.
  • Work with the Managing Attorney on case strategy, relief eligibility, and preparation priorities.
  • Assign and monitor paralegal work, provide clear instructions, and resolve questions that require legal judgment.
  • Review applications, supporting documents, exhibit packages, and proposed filings for accuracy, consistency, and readiness for attorney approval.
  • Ensure filings and service are completed timely and that filing confirmations are documented.
  • Track evidence collection, client follow‑up, and hearing preparation so cases continue moving forward.
  • Coordinate preparation materials for the Managing Attorney and any appearance or coverage counsel.
  • Ensure case notes, task assignments, deadlines, and status updates remain current in the case management system.
  • Flag urgent issues, stalled matters, workload concerns, and approaching deadlines promptly.
  • Provide case‑specific client guidance and follow‑up when attorney involvement is needed.
  • Assist with emergency motions or other urgent legal writing as needed.
  • Provide responsive support through Microsoft Teams when the Managing Attorney is in court.
Paralegal Support

You will work with a four‑person EOIR paralegal support team:

  • A supervising paralegal available from 7:00–10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, primarily assisting with case review, task management, and follow‑through.
  • A paralegal dedicated to bond applications.
  • A full‑time support paralegal.
  • A part‑time support paralegal.

You will direct and review their work, establish priorities, and ensure accountability for assigned responsibilities.

Schedule and Availability
  • Attendance at the daily weekday team huddle at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time is required.
  • Outside the huddle, you may manage your own schedule within agreed part‑time hours.
  • You must maintain a fixed, recurring schedule so the paralegals know when you are available for questions, reviews, and approvals.
  • You must be reachable through Microsoft Teams for urgent court‑related questions when the Managing Attorney is in court. Availability and response expectations will be established at hiring.
  • Consistency, punctuality, and timely communication are essential.
Qualifications
  • Active license to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction and eligibility to practice before EOIR.
  • Experience handling EOIR removal defense matters.
  • Strong understanding of immigration court procedures, relief applications, motions, filing requirements, and deadlines.
  • Experience overseeing paralegal work and managing a substantial caseload.
  • Ability to identify urgent legal issues, prioritize competing deadlines, and provide practical direction.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and written and verbal communication.
  • Comfort working remotely with case management software and Microsoft Teams.
