Overview

Vermont State Parks is seeking a diversely qualified and dynamic person to fill a year-round, fast-paced position directly overseeing the operations of 7 state park locations within the northwest region. This position recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates seasonal park managers, front line staff, and volunteers. Through collaboration with a dedicated maintenance and regional management team, this role leads the hiring and supervision of our seasonal workforce, creates trainings, provides insight on operational and facilities planning, and participates in policy development and implementation. A track record of clear written and oral communication is essential for success.

Work is often field-based during the operating season, with a primary office location in Essex and a secondary office setting in North Hero; much of the time is spent in parks working directly with staff. Substantial daily travel is necessary; a work vehicle is provided for official business. Preference will be given to the candidates that demonstrate extensive experience in local, state or national park operations and management; customer service; employee supervision, coaching, mediation, and evaluation of a seasonal workforce in a decentralized environment; and designing and implementing training programs for a seasonal workforce. Duties are performed in office and field settings in all seasons. Significant day-to-day travel within the region is frequently required during the park season. Incumbents must be able to lift heavy weights and use tools and equipment necessary for park operations. Duties require considerable public contact, sometimes under stressful conditions. Incumbents are expected to respond to or advise on emergencies on evenings and weekends during the park season when available. Incumbents must possess a valid driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher AND three (3) years or more of experience in park operations, park maintenance, recreation, or conservation field INCLUDING one (1) year of supervisory experience.

OR

Two years of full-time college coursework OR an associate's degree AND five (5) years or more of experience in park operations, park maintenance, recreation, or conservation field INCLUDING one (1) year of supervisory experience.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND seven (7) years or more of experience in park operations, park maintenance, recreation, or conservation field INCLUDING one (1) year of supervisory experience.
