Job summary

New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is seeking a grounds maintenance worker to perform planting, weeding, watering and trimming of shrubs, vines, flowers, and crop plants. The role involves identifying invasive species, maintaining beds, operating hand and power tools, and assisting visitors with horticulture information.

Responsibilities include safety reporting, occasional snow removal, equipment upkeep, and willingness to travel to multiple NYS Parks sites in the NYC

Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
• Ability to write and communicate proficiently in English.
• Prior grounds maintenance experience preferred.
• Able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and set priorities.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
• Willing to support additional tasks across NYS Parks work sites.
• Able to work min. 40 hours per week, including weekends.

Responsibilities

• Perform planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing and trimming of shrubs, vines, flowers, and crop plants.
• Identify, supervise, or remove invasive species.
• Inspect areas for safety hazards and landscaping needs and report or correct as needed.
• Maintain planted beds via weeding, pruning, mulching, edging and raking.
• Operate hand and portable power tools and equipment (mowers, tractors, sprayers, etc.).
• Assist park visitors with horticultural information and enforce park rules.
• Operate light trucks and other motor vehicles as required.
• Load/unload materials and equipment of varying weights.
• Perform routine manual maintenance and equipment storage.
• Perform snow removal and grounds maintenance as needed.
• Perform other related duties as required.
