GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of park and recreation buildings, grounds, open spaces, and parks.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Park Operations Supervisor/Assistant Supervisor or Crew Leader.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None generally. May supervise temporary employees or community service workers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
- Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs.
- Drag ball fields, clean bases, and line fields for games.
- Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Pulls and mechanically removes weeds from landscape beds, trims, and shapes shrubs.
- Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance and repairs such as painting, carpentry, mechanical, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trade work.
- Inspects and maintains assigned equipment and small tools for proper operating condition.
- Maintains city parks and recreation facilities using a variety of power equipment including push mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, power-washers, blowers, etc.
- Maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
- Performs various labor duties as part of a crew in construction and maintenance projects.
- Carrying out seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and pest and weed control of the City’s parks and open spaces.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs.
- Installs and maintains goal posts and nets for sports facilities.
- Assists in the construction of new park facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
- Operates push mowers, jackhammers, power washers, string trimmers, edgers, blowers, backpack sprayers, shovels, rakes, hand tools, and other equipment as needed.
- Maintains skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
- Keeps a record of work completed.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety standards.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; some knowledge of minor repair tools and supplies; basic knowledge of first aid and safety precautions.
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to work independently, complete daily activities according to schedule, lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods, communicate effectively orally and in writing, use equipment safely, understand instructions, establish effective relationships, and perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Pickup trucks, trailers, lawn and landscaping equipment including mowers, aerifiers, chainsaws, edgers, string trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems, hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, cement finishing, and janitorial equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands include frequent reaching, standing, walking, handling objects, and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, and hearing. The employee must frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds and occasionally over 100 pounds. Vision requirements include close focus and adjustable focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, wet/humid conditions, outdoor weather, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and electrical shocks. Noise levels are usually quiet during indoor night shifts.
