Under general supervision, to do skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled work in assisting in the operation and maintenance of Parks and Recreation property, including parks, cemeteries, and other municipal properties. This position supports multiple teams performing maintenance tasks within the department, such as cemetery, park grounds, aquatic facility operation, horticulture, landscape, natural resources, trail, sports parks, and construction activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of an associate’s program in horticulture, forestry, mortuary science, natural resources, or other earth sciences, along with a year of full-time experience in park or cemetery maintenance.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience, with one year of education equating to two years of experience, and at least one year of experience operating pumps, motors, machinery, or similar equipment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa.
- Within one year of appointment: valid class A or B commercial driver’s license, and a valid Iowa pesticide applicators license in categories 3OT, 3G, 5, or 6.
- Depending on the work assignment, within one year of appointment: valid (CPO) Certified Pool Operator's certificate, completion of S-130 Firefighter Training and S-190 Introduction to Fire Behavior, or valid (CPSI) Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification.
Additional Requirements
- Pass a post-employment physical examination and drug screening.
- Pass a background check.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct turf grass culture, renovation, and maintenance, including soil conditioning, sodding, seeding, watering, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, pesticide and herbicide application, and seed mix recommendations.
- Perform horticultural and natural resource maintenance, including planting, maintaining, and removing landscape beds and other plantings, pruning, weed control, and assisting forestry in tree health and safety.
- Perform facility site maintenance, including minor plumbing, irrigation system maintenance, and cemetery site operations such as locating burial sites, grave preparation, and monument handling.
- Operate and maintain swimming pool equipment, including pumps, filters, and chemical balancing.
- Perform snow removal, restroom maintenance, and environmental landscaping projects.
- Inspect and maintain trees and the urban forest, and ensure municipal properties are free of debris and hazards.
- Assist with planning and installation of capital projects, and maintain park structures and facilities.
- Operate a variety of equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
- Lead and coordinate daily work activities, ensuring safety and adherence to policies.
- Engage with community groups and stakeholders to gather input and promote city policies.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
- Complete safety and other required training courses.
- Perform additional maintenance tasks as assigned.
