Job summary

Responsibilities

• Performs corrective maintenance and repairs of park structures including plumbing, lighting, and vents.
• Mows and maintains park grounds; performs weed eating and litter pickup.
• Operates and maintains park vehicles, mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and other equipment.
• Repairs bridges, walkways; paints/stains structures; clears trails; maintains grills and fire rings.
• Ensures cleanliness of interiors and exteriors of cabins, group camps, lodges, bathhouses and meeting spaces.
• Performs custodial duties to maintain clean and sanitary conditions.
• Removes trash and prepares laundry for pickup.
• Cleans bathhouses, campground areas and day-use spaces; assists customers with questions.
• Provides park and local community information to visitors.

Job description

The Office of State Parks (OSP) serves the citizens of Louisiana and visitors by preserving and interpreting natural areas of unique or exceptional scenic value, planning, developing and operating sites that provide outdoor recreation opportunities in natural surroundings, preserving and interpreting historical and scientific sites of statewide importance and administering intergovernmental programs related to outdoor recreation and trails.

This position is located at Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, LA. The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, groundskeeping and custodial duties to help maintain cleanliness and a safe environment for the customers. This includes operating and repairing equipment, performing grounds maintenance such as mowing and trail cleanup, and preventative maintenance on all rental facilities including cabins, group camps, meeting rooms, bathhouses, etc. This position will also assist in indoor and outdoor custodial duties as needed, for all rental facilities and outdoor spaces.

Job Duties

• Performs corrective maintenance and repairs of park structures including plumbing, changing breakers, lighting, cleaning air vents, etc.
• Maintains the park grounds such as mowing, weed eating, blowing, litter pickup, etc.
• Operates vehicles, utility vehicles, mowers, weed eaters, blowers, tractors, pressure washers, etc.
• Repair bridges, walkways; paint and stain park structures; clear trails; maintain grills and fire rings, etc.
• Ensure cleanliness of the interior and exterior of the buildings on site such as cabins, group camps, lodges, bathhouses, meeting rooms, etc. Duties would include but not limited to, disinfecting, changing linens, cleaning bathrooms, mopping, sweeping, dusting, etc.
• Perform any and all custodial duties necessary to maintain clean and sanitary conditions.
• Removes trash and prepares dirty laundry for pickup.
• Cleans & picks up litter/trash from bathhouses, campground areas, and day use areas.
• Assists customers with questions and concerns.
• Provide park and local community information to customers.

Location: Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, LA

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotion, or Detail to Special Duty

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Park Technician A, B, or C. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled based on the qualifications of the selected applicant. Work Schedule: State Parks are open 365 days a year. Position will work a rotating schedule of 40 hours/week, which can include holidays and/or weekends as needed, to ensure coverage at the park.

Travel: Position requires driving around the park as part of the daily shift. Travel may be required to other state parks to assist in staffing or events, as needed. A state vehicle is available for employee use while on duty.
